    Our November Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Monty!

    November is here and whilst it is getting cold outside, our pet of the month will certainly warm your hearts! Introducing you to the beautiful Monty, a lively and loveable golden labrador.

    Good afternoon Monty

    Hi there, are you here to play?

    – Monty runs to get ball –

    Er – Well, actually I am here to ask you some questions. But how about we play once we are finished? 

    Okay! Sounds good to me. I will just keep my ball here ready.

    Fantastic! Am I right in thinking that playing fetch might be your favourite game?

    Oh yes! Playing and fetching my tennis ball when it’s thrown for me – I can’t get enough of that game.

    It’s a great game! How would you describe your perfect day Monty?

    An early morning walk on the cow field followed by a game with my tennis ball on the rugby field.

    Then, once home I like to eat my breakfast as fast as I can like I’m in a race!

    THEN, I like to have a short nap in my doughnut bed listening to classic FM (Alan Titchmarsh is my favourite presenter).

    THEN, like to meet up with my best friends Arthur and Liesel over in the fields, we love going down into ditches and getting muddy and dirty.

    THEN, in the afternoon I like to go and see grandad he plays ball with me in his garden and then I get to eat a whole carrot.

    THEN, I got to the pub in the evening where I sit patiently and get treats for doing high fives.

    It’s quite exhausting being Monty, so I like an early bedtime, ready for another day of action.

    My word Monty, you have some big plans. And a lot of energy!

    So much energy!

    You mentioned getting treats, do you have a favourite kind of treat?

    I like carrots and gravy bones the best!

    Mmm, tasty. Do you have any special toys?

    I love pig he squeaks, and I must carry him all day. Also, the tennis ball that must be with me.

    Of course. Now, do you ever get in trouble for any naughty habits?

    I love to sneak into the cupboard and get someone’s slippers or flip-flops, and then someone will chase me to get them back! I always get a treat to drop them so that’s good, I might as well keep doing it. Socks are equally as good, especially when they are clean.

    Very cheeky! So, who would you say is your best friend?

    My best friend is Liesel I get to see her at the weekends and get mucky in the fields and ditches she has taught me a lot and we have great fun together.

    Lovely. Right, it’s nearly time to play ball. But first, I need to know, are you a good boy?

    I’m a very good boy if there’s a treat involved.

    Our October Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Spider!

    As it’s the month of Halloween, we have a spooktastic pet to share with you for October. Meet Spider, a beautiful four-year-old black cat with a passion for all things spooky.

    Is it okay if I call you Spider?

    Sure. Mum calls me “Spiddy” most of the time, and sometimes “Oi”, which is a bit rude.

    I am sure she says it with love.

    Hmm.

    Is your Mum your best friend?

    Nope. My best friend is the postman! He comes to see me every day, even though his hand is covered in scratches.

    Oh my word, poor postie! Do you get in trouble for scratching?

    Pfft. Yeah. Mum thinks it’s naughty when I pluck the sofa too, but I’m just passionate about my art.

    So misunderstood.

    Preach.

    So, Spider, describe your perfect day to me.

    Every day is my perfect day. I wake up, sit on Mum’s head and then run around the house. If I’m peckish, I will eat, then attack my brother!

    It’s nice to meet a cat who has it all worked out.

    I know what I like.

    Do you have any other favourite games or pass times?

    Well, sometimes, this red dot appears on the floor and up the walls, I love chasing that thing!

    Red dots are awesome! And what about favourite snacks?

    Doritos! Especially tangy cheese, but I have to wait until Mum’s not looking because she says they’re “unhealthy”.

    Our September Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Ricky!

    September is here, and it’s time to introduce you to another one of our beautiful pets. This month we are meeting Ricky the house rabbit, a continental giant who loves cuddles.

    How is your day going?

    Great thank you, I have had lots of cuddles so far.

    Sounds lovely, how would you describe your perfect day Ricky?

    It would involve lots of cuddles, and vegetables! I love crunching on veggies. And then I would take a really long nap.

    What a day! Have you got any favourite vegetables?

    Carrots! Cliche, I know. I also love carrot cruncher biscuits and fresh apple slices.

    Such a healthy balance! So after snacks, how do you like to spend your time?

    Aside from snacks, I like chasing everyone.

    Yeah, I run really fast til I catch them. Then we have cuddles.

    Well, that sounds like fun! Do you ever get told off for chasing?

    Only when I chase the cat because the cat tells on me.

    Our August Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Oscar!

    A new month is here, which means it’s time to introduce another of our beautiful pets to you. At Scallywags, we get out and meet a special pet every month so we can share them with our lovely customers (my favourite job!). Get ready for some paw-some photographs and cute canine quirks!

    Good afternoon, Oscar! 

    Oh, hello! Do you have treats?

    I do, but would it be okay if I ask you some questions first so our readers can get to know you a little better? 

    And then there will be treats?

    Yes, once we are finished there will definitely be treats. 

    Okay, I’m in!

    Brilliant! All this talk of treats is making me hungry. Tell me, Oscar, do you have a favourite treat?

    I eat ANYTHING. But I love chicken strips the most. Daddy gets them from Scallywags and then wraps them around delicious treats like cheese or carrots for me.

    That sounds yummy! So, is Daddy your best friend?

    Yes! Wait, no. I mean, my Nana is my best friend because she gives me breakfast and dinner.

    Is the way to your heart through your stomach?

    Yes! It’s important to know I am open to more best friend candidates, depending on the quality and quantity of snacks they provide.

    You and me both!

    Mmmm….snacks.

    I have heard though that sometimes the snacks can make you a bit windy.

    Yes, and stinky. And sometimes the toots are so loud that I make myself jump!

    We’ve all been there, there is no shame in it. What do you do to calm yourself down afterwards?

    I play with my tennis balls, I have so many. I have even picked a favourite one for each day of the week!

    Tennis balls are great! Do you ever take them to the park?

    Yeah, Daddy takes me on lots of walks. He is a bit silly though and keeps throwing the balls far away, but I am helpful and always bring them back for him.

    Aww, it sounds like you are a very helpful pup! 

    I like to help, I even help Daddy at work sometimes.

    Lucky Daddy!  You are a very clever pooch, aren’t you?

    Yes, my Nana says I should be a Police dog.

    I think I agree! Maybe you should apply?

    No, they don’t let you have tennis balls, I asked.

    Well, it’s their loss. So, Ozzy, can you describe your perfect day for me?

    Yes, I have it all planned out. It would start with treats, then balls, then a walk – with balls, then treats, then maybe another walk, then I would count my tennis balls, then playtime, followed by treats. Then when I gets super tired, I would snuggle up and sleep in the middle of Daddy’s bed.

    Then treats? Do you promise?

    Our July Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Phoebe!

    Every month Scallywags, I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing a special pet from the Cherry Lane family and introducing them to our lovely customers. This month I got to meet a very special lady, the very beautiful Phoebe, an eight-year-old short hair cat.

    Good afternoon, Phoebe.

    Me? Yes, hello.

    My apologies for disturbing you, but I am here to have a little chat and ask some questions so our audience can get to know you better. Would that be okay?

    Why yes, of course, one would be happy to have a chinwag.

    Excellent! May I start by asking if you have any nicknames you’d prefer I called you?

    What on earth is a nickname?! Phoebe will do quite nicely, thank you.

    As you wish, Phoebe it is! That’s a lovely scratch post, would you say that is your favourite toy?

    No, no, no. My most beloved toy is my little mouse which Daddy fills with catnip for me. I do love the odd scrummy little treat!

    You and me both! What’s your favourite treat?

    Dreamies! I don’t even mind which flavour, but they are positively scrumptious!

    Sounds dreamy! Get it?

    Stop that.

    Sorry. Now, if you could describe your perfect day to me, what would it involve?

    Sleeping! Siestas, lounging, dozing, napping… perhaps a little fine dining… and then some more sleeping.

    Lovely! Would it not involve some dressing up?

    Excuse me?

    I’ve heard you like dressing up? Look at this lovely festive number…

    Well, I think it looks brilliant. But we’ll move on. Do you have any favourite games you like to play?

    Yes, I like fighting with my Daddy, especially after he embarrasses me!

    Oh no! Poor Daddy, would you say he is your best friend?

    I don’t have any best friends, but I am happy to temporarily convince humans I like them so they give me my food.

    Are there ever times when they get cross at you and seem to like you a little less?

    They definitely don’t like it when I am sick on the carpet. Sorry Mummy and Daddy.

    Our June Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Hermione!

    Here at Scallywags, we adore all creatures great and small and every month we will introduce you to a pet from our family. Find out all about this month’s pet, from their favourite treats to their cheekiest moments of mischief!

    Let me introduce you to the remarkable Hermione, an 11-month-old Speckled Lady chicken.

    Good morning, Hermione!

    Good morning.

    I would love to ask you some questions and introduce you to our lovely customers, if that sounds okay? 

    Of course, I am always up for a chinwag.

    I see you’ve got some lovely friends with you today, would you introduce me? 

    Yes, these are my best friends – Cecelia, Kitty and Choc Ice.

    Beautiful names! How lovely. I bet you have lots of friends?

    I mean, I wouldn’t like to brag, but I am quite popular. Maud and Matilda, Mum’s dog and cat are always running around out here with us. But if they try and eat our corn then I have to chase them a bit, you know, to protect my valuables.

    Of course, I wouldn’t want anyone taking my food. Is corn your favourite food?

    Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love corn on the cob. My favourite food though would be blueberries! Ooo! Or maybe a big, fresh, JUICY earthworm!

    Mmmm….sounds slimy! Where do you find your earthworms?

    I have to dig around for them, but it’s good fun. We do it as part of a team and it’s much easier when it has just finished raining.

    I’m glad you enjoy it! How would you describe your perfect day, Hermione?

    Hmm… good question. I would wake up, get some food, lay an egg and then have a glorious dust bath.

    A dust bath?!

    Hey, don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.

    Fair enough! That does sound like a lovely day. Do you ever get up to any mischief or get told off for being naughty?

    Yes. I am sort of the ring leader of my crew. You see, I know that my humans are hoarding blueberries in the kitchen, but they deny it all the time. So, me and the coop crew often hatch plans to escape the run and raid the kitchen for blueberries.

    Wow! Sounds like you and the girls have had a lot of adventures! So, have you ever found any blueberries?

    No, not yet. But we will keep trying for as long as we can cluck! I know those blueberries are out there somewhere…

    Well, Hermione. I actually have a surprise for you. I have got you a punnet of plump, fresh blueberries for as soon as we finish this interview!

    Really? Thank you! Well come on then, let’s round this up.

    It’s okay, I just finished one. I naps after breakfast, and before lunch and after lunch and all afternoon and I also naps after dinner! I love naps.

    Sure, as long as it doesn’t run into my before lunch nap.

    My hoomans call me Silly Pants sometimes, and sometimes they even call me Chunky Monkey, how rude is that?

    I eats everythin – I specially enjoys eating what my Mumma drops on the floors when she’s doing the cookings!

    Let me introduce you to the beautiful Banksy.

    What beautiful sunshine we are having, I hope you don’t mind me interrupting your sunbathing for a quick chat?

    It’s okay, I need to come in for a snack anyway.

    Well, that is handy timing. What is your favourite snack? 

    Cheese. Cubed, grated, sliced – I like a variety.

    Great idea, cheese is delicious. Do you know who else loves cheese? 

    No, but they should give their cheese to me. Who is it?

    Mice! 

    WHERE?!

    False alarm, my bad! I am guessing you are not a fan of mice?

    I love mice. I like chasing them and playing with them. I have lots of toy mice, quite the collection actually. My mice toys are perfect for a game of fetch.

    Sorry, fetch? I thought that was a game for dogs.

    Please don’t stereotype. Fetch is species neutral.

    My apologies, Banksy. Who do you like to play fetch with? 

    No problem. I will play fetch with anyone, but Mummy is the best at throwing.

    Is Mummy your best friend? 

    Yes! Mummy always gives the best head scratches and most importantly, she always shares her cheese.

    Mmm…

    You’re thinking about cheese, aren’t you?

    Yep!

    Can’t say I blame you. I know Mummy is your best friend, but does she ever get cross at you for anything?

    She gets really annoyed when I play with my bathroom spinny toy. But if it’s so bad, then why put a spinny toy in the bathroom?

    What’s your bathroom spinny toy?

    That’s toilet paper! I don’t think that’s supposed to be a toy, Banksy.

    Okay, well, moving on then. If you could describe your perfect day to me, what would it involve?

    Sleeping. Naps, there would definitely be naps. A quick game of fetch maybe, and cheese. And some sleeping. Sleep is good.

    Our February Pet of the Month for Scallywags is Lara the Labradoodle!

    Here at Scallywags, we adore all creatures great and small, so we have decided to share some of our special friends with you. Every month we will be sharing a story with you about one of our paw-some pets. As well as some super adorable photographs.

    I was lucky enough to have the very special honour of speaking with Lara on her birthday.

     

    Good morning Lara – and a very Happy Birthday to you! Are you having a lovely day so far?

    Good morning. Yesh, I am having the best day thank you. I have had lots of cuddles and all of my humans are extra smiley and squeaky today.

    That’s very good to hear. May I ask how old you are today?

    Of course. I gets a bit confused with my age. My humans say I am 9, but my dog friends say I am 59.

    Well, you don’t look a day over fabulous Lara. So, are you spending your day with your best friend today?

    Yesh. I have already had lots of cuddles with Mum. When she is at work I hang out with Nanna, she is my favourite because she gives me lots of extra treats – which Mum tells her off for!

    Cheeky Nanna! If it was up to you, how would you spend your perfect day?

    I would likes lots of belly rubs. And burgers. Oh, and a walk to the park. And more belly rubs. And burgers.

    Sounds wonderful, do you have any special games to play at the park?

    Yesh. I love it when Mum brings the ball. I like to play with the ball. It is my ball. I am good at fetching the ball, but I don’t give it back, because it is my ball.

    Well, that seems fair enough to me. Does Mum have any special nicknames for you Lara?

    Mum calls me lots of funny names. It’s mostly ‘Larabum’ or ‘Doodlebear’. When I get belly rubs, sometimes I am called ‘Big Chunk’. After a bath, my hair goes super curly wurly, so I transform into ‘Curlybum’.

    Ah, so like a superhero?

    Exactly! With a cape of curls.

    Do you ever get in trouble with Mum for being naughty?

    Yesh. I like to steal her socks and hide them up.

    It’s okay Lara, none of us are perfect. Now tell me, what are your favourite treats for when you have been really good?

    Gravy bones! I loves the gravy bones. And gravy. And all the human food, but I has to make sure that my humans are not looking.

    Very stealthy. I’ve heard you have a favourite toy as well?

    CATERPILLAR! I love my caterpillar. I like to leave him in special places so my humans trip over him. The humans make so much noise when they trip, so I know that they love my surprises.

    Here at Scallywags, we adore all creatures great and small, so we have decided to share some of our special friends with you. Our lovely team have been kind enough to let me interview their adorable fur babies (best job ever!).

    My time with Jack

    After much negotiating, I finally convinced Jack to let go of his cardboard tube and answer some questions for me.

    So, Jack, thank you for your time today, I can see you’re busy. I would like to ask you some questions so our customers can get to know you better. Would that be okay?

    Yeah sure, I always have time for my fans.

    I was wondering, do you have any nicknames?

    Well, my full name is actually Jack Daniels. I must be named after someone very important to my human. When Mum is happy with me, I am “bubba”, but if I’m being cheeky then I am “monkey”.

    Well, Mr. Daniels –

    Please, call me Jack.

    Okay, Jack, can you tell me about your favourite treats?

    Mummy gets me these little chewy sticks that taste like fish. I like to take them to my chair and chew them up into tiny little pieces. I want to eat the whole pack, but I only ever get one at a time.

    Mmm, sounds delicious! So, what do you like to get up to in your spare time?

    I like chasing my feet, I can just never keep up with them.

    WATCH THIS!

    (Jack rolls around in his chair chasing his feet. Perhaps we should have a quick interlude.)

    That was very impressive!

    I know, I am good at catching feet. I also have a catnip toy, that thing is addictive!

    That sounds like fun, can you tell me more about your most-loved toy?

    It looks like a fish, but it’s not a real fish – and it’s filled with catnip. Catnip is the best. Where did I leave that thing?

    (Jack looks around the room for a while)

    Jack?

    Huh?

    How would you describe your perfect day?

    I think it would start with a little siesta on the armchair, then maybe I’d take a stroll outside. I like to check the garden perimeter to make sure it is secure. Then I play a bit, chase some shadows and get back to my chair.

    That sounds paw-fect! Now I wonder, do you have any naughty habits?

    I am not proud to say it, but yes. I like to wake up my mummy, a lot. I just miss her sometimes when it’s dark and I get sad, so I pounce on her a little. I also really like climbing on the bedroom door!

    Well, that does sound reasonable to me. Who would you say is your best friend?

    My mummy would like to think that it’s her, but it’s actually the laundry basket. We go way back to when I was just a kitten. He just gets me.
