What is a workshop shed?
A workshop shed is simply an outdoor building that provides you with a space to carry out your work . Whether you need somewhere for your hobbies or to work from home, a workshop can tailored to be whatever you need it to be.
With practicality and functionality in mind, your workshop can be the ideal place for DIY projects. Install a workbench and plenty of storage, so you can keep your tools close at hand whilst working.
What is the difference between a shed and a workshop?
In theory, any workshop can be a shed - but not every shed can be a workshop. A workshop must have sufficient space for someone to be inside and carry out their tasks. Aside from just providing dry storage like a shed, a workshop needs to provide a workspace, such as a workbench.
In general, workshops are much larger and usually have windows to provide adequate lighting for tasks. If large machinery needs to moved in and out of the building regularly, a double door would be the most practical choice.
Can you use a shed as a workshop?
A shed can be used as a workshop if it provides you with enough workspace for your desired task. If this is somewhere you plan to spend lots of time, make sure your building has enough room for you to stand up comfortably. You will also need to consider lighting, whether daylight or electrical.
With functionality in mind, think about the tasks you wish to do in your workshop and design the interior to suit that activity. If the shed is on the smaller size, it may not be fit for purpose as workshops are generally much larger than the average shed.
What is a good size shed for a workshop?
The perfect size for a workshop very much depends on the intended purpose for the building. Most potting sheds and small workshops start at around 8 foot by 6 foot. This is to allow ample room for things like workbenches and movement, along with headroom of course. Take some time to plan the interior of your shed, consider sizes of machinery and workbenches, before deciding on the building size.
It is important to note with shed sizes, that the sizing does not refer to the floor area. The sizes provided will measure the widest part of the building, which is usually the roof. As the roof will need a slight overhang, it will naturally be wider than the rest of the building.
