More About Awnings & Canopies

Get instant protection from the elements while chilling outside with one of our Awnings or Canopies. Whether you have a retractable awning or wall-mounted canopy, they’re ideal for outside dining in all weather. They’re simple, effective and add a touch of class to your outdoor space.

  • What does an awning do?

    • You see a lot of awnings on shop fronts to protect window displays from overheating or to give diners a bit of shade. And a garden awning is exactly the same.

A stationary or retractable awning is an overhang or covering attached to a building to offer shade and protection from the elements.

  • Do you need planning permission for an awning?

    • Not usually. As long as there are no negative side effects to your neighbours such as water running off onto their land or encroaches on their space, you should be fine.

There can also be restrictions if your home is a listed building or in a conservation area. Check with your local planning permission department for advice.

  • What’s the use of a canopy?

    • Similar to an awning, a canopy adds shade and protection from rain to an area of your choosing.

They can be added to pergolas over patios and decking, they can have their own metal structures in the middle of your garden, and they can be removed if you feel like it.

  • What’s the difference between a canopy and an awning?

    • While their functions are the same, and they’re often made with similar materials, canopies and awnings are not alike.

Material attached to your home or building in a fixed position to offer protection from sun or rain.

Canopies: Fabric you can hang on a metal frame or add to a pergola for additional coverage.

The main difference is that Awnings are fixed, whereas Canopies can be moved.
