More About Garden Playhouses

If your children want to play 'House', where better than a children's playhouse? Playing in the garden is always fun when they have a space all their own. We have wooden playhouses and wendy houses in a range of styles to suit your gardens.

Encourage little ones to spend more time outdoors and nurture their imaginations. A playhouse will bring hours of joy and entertainment to young ones, giving you more time to put your feet up in the sunshine.

To give your playhouse the best start, we recommend using an appropriate shed base and following the manufacturer's guide on treating the wood. Most wooden buildings will require a regular application of preservatives for the wood unless they have been pressure treated previously.

  • Plastic Vs. Wood playhouses

    • Which is better, plastic or wood? It entirely depends on you. A wooden Wendy house is traditional, smart and looks like a real home adding an extra touch to your games, but a plastic outdoor playhouse can be super bright and colourful too.

      A Wooden playhouse

      • Pros:

      Traditional

      Can be painted fun colours

      Can be More realistic

      • Cons:

      More expensive

      Less mobile

The wood needs care and looking after

      A Plastic playhouse

      • Pros:

      Colourful

Can be moved around the garden

      Totally weather resistant

      Easy to clean

      • Cons:

      Not as strong

      Not as realistic

      Not as big

  • Why are they called Wendy houses?

    • They’re only really called that in the UK because of J.M.Barrie – the author of Peter Pan. In the play, he called the house that the lost boys build around Wendy Darling, Wendy’s House.

The house (or tent as it was in the production) being erected so quickly was such a popular part of the play that toy manufacturers began making replicas, and thus, the British Playhouse was renamed forever.

  • How big are playhouses?

    • Playhouses can be any size really, from small toddler ones, to large constructions similar to summer houses.

There are planning permission rules to adhere to with any ‘building’ in your garden, so if you’re building your own, make sure you have a look, and any commercially-made children’s playhouse will built to adhere to all these guidelines, so purchasing a pre-made one may be easier.
