In the spring and summer when they’re in use regularly, it’s a lot of effort to keep covering and uncovering your outdoor furniture. It’s best to make sure you keep them clean and insect-free before making the most of the sunshine.
In autumn and winter as the cool, dark and damp weather moves in, you should try and put your furniture in storage. If it’s too big or you don’t have the space, you should employ some kind of garden furniture protection like a cover to keep away the elements.
Garden furniture cushions aren’t too big or too cumbersome to be protected every night though. At the end of the day, bring them inside away from the dew, or put them in specially-made storage boxes like these.
Not all garden furniture covers come with a cord and toggle to tighten up around the bottom so here’s some ways you can secure them yourself.
• Fastener clips - You can get plastic clips which you can fasten over the covers and onto the legs of your outdoor furniture.
• Clamps - Cover clamps are like big bulldog clips. They can be used along the bottom of your larger pieces of furniture to keep the covers in place.
• Bungee ties - Some covers come with eyelets around the edge, you can use bungee ties to loop through them and around your furniture legs for safety.
• Rope - As above, if there are eyelets, wind some rope in and out of the eyelets all the way around, put it over your furniture and pull to gather and tighten it into place.
Outdoor furniture covers are generally made from a wipe clean material that’s designed to bead away water and protect from the sun. It’s not recommended to machine wash your covers if they’ve been treated with any kind of additional protection. You should avoid scrubbing too. Just use a cloth and some mildly-soapy water to avoid degrading any coating.
For cushions, cleaning them depends on their style. If the cushion covers are removeable, there should be a label inside with details on how to wash them. If the covers are non-removeable, you’ll have to sponge the surface with soapy warm water to remove any marks and stains, then thoroughly rinse and allow them to completely dry before use.
