More About Garden Planters

Garden planters are the perfect home for your choice of colourful shrubbery and flowers. Create your own floral displays in wooden planters and plant troughs, perfect for giving your garden a stunning focal point.

We have large pots for plants, making it easier to change up the look of your garden when needed.

From wall planters to wooden planter boxes and ceramic troughs, explore the range of colours, shapes and sizes we have on offer.

  • What do you line planter boxes with?

    • Lining your planter boxes isn’t essential, but it can help retain water, prolong the lifespan of the box and, in some cases, prevent toxins leaking into your soil.

Wooden planters need a lining more than others, so find a good quality landscape fabric and line the whole box with it. Just make sure it’s porous to allow for drainage. With other planters, just make sure you line the bottom to prevent soil draining out the hole with the water.

Alternatively, you can simply plant your flowers or shrubs in a plastic pot and sit it in the planter, which is great if you want to switch and change your florals.

  • Why is the colour of plant pots important?

    • Carefully consider the colour of your pots before planting as some can affect the soil temperature and how well your plant grows.

Darker plant pots, like blacks or dark blues and brown, can heat the soil more. Now in winter weather this is a good thing. However, in summer it can essentially aid in the cooking of your plant’s roots and severely restrict growth.

In lighter white and silver pots, more heat-sensitive plants may fare better as they don’t heat up so fast.

  • Do I need to put rocks at the bottom of a planter?

    • You don’t need to put loads of rocks in the bottom of plant pots, one or two to cover the drainage holes is sufficient. The goal is to prevent the soil leaking out with water. It has no other real benefit.

  • Will cement planters crack in the winter?

    • Concrete and cement are naturally frost-resistant when dry, but with moist soil inside in a state of freezing and expanding, your concrete planter may crack. Bring them inside over winter to best protect them or wrap them in horticultural fleece or bubblewrap.
